Micro-learning modules can be a session in their own right and typically take 7-10 minutes to complete. Micro-learning modules are linked together to form mini-learning modules which, if run as a session, might take as much as an hour to complete. Mini-learning modules can be linked to form a full training course that could take several hours to complete.
As an example, a mini-module/session could be installing a railroad shunt and testing it. The micro-learning modules consist of each task required ranging from where to deploy watchmen, how to communicate, where and how to install the shunt, how to test the shunt, how to remove the shunt, etc.
A full course could be replacing a section of track and will include all the mini-modules required to complete that work. Micro- and mini-modules seamlessly link so the user does not see a break in the action as one micro-module ends and another seamlessly launches.
Micro-modules are like LEGO® blocks that can be assembled to build a training session, or course, with any scenario(s) and any level of complexity the trainer desires without the need to do any hard-coded programming or recompiling.
Details of the micro-module are written in a text file which is dynamically linked in the session. This structure allows trainers to easily change the training content details as SOPs and circumstances evolve.
Data across multiple skill sets are collected from a training session then stored on a database accessible to an in-house Learning Management System.
These data are analyzed to determine the user’s competency for each of the skill sets defined, then adjustments are made to the scenario based on the user’s needs. This approach allows users to advance in skill sets they are proficient at without leaving them behind in skill sets they are weak in.
The result is a training session adaptively tuned to the user’s needs and skills.
